Networking Success: Jynx’s Story
[Estimated Reading Time: 2 minutes, 9 seconds] Networking can alter the course of your career, especially if you’re tired of running into endless brick walls in pursuit of a new position. Just ask Jynx Gresser.
She’s the marketing and communications coordinator at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum, and she landed that role by meeting others. It all started back in 2017, when she began volunteering with AMA Columbus to procure more experience, hopping into the Content and Communications committee.
“I was lucky enough to work with peers who had expertise with both the non-profit sector as well as the agency side of marketing,” she said.
Two years later, she became VP of content and communications for our group. (A role she still holds today.)
“At the same time, the VP of volunteers, a recruiter at Portfolio Creative, said he had the perfect job for me,” she recounted.
The opportunity was a temporary role. At first.
“I was working two jobs: full-time retail and part-time temp at the museum,” she said. “Finally, I was able to put my foot in the door!”
Her hard work and patience paid off. Jynx was hired full-time in 2020, and the rest is history. It’s a job she would not have landed without getting involved with AMA Columbus.
Whether volunteering with the board or attending our networking events, the door for your next career move may open by the hand of someone connected to our group. It’s a lesson Jynx will always remember, and she’s happy to stay involved with us.
“Simply put, the AMA is where connections meet community,” she said. “They invest in your success. I also enjoy the educational opportunities and weekly emails that keep you on the cutting edge.”
She advised others seeking work in the Columbus marketing industry to never lose faith.
“Keep going, keep applying,” she said. “Don’t miss an opportunity to connect with people. I applied to nearly 400+ jobs after I graduated with my MBA. It was the connection that made the connection. People are more open to helping you than you think. Just ask.”
